In
the late 1980s, executives of The St. Paul Companies decided to
renew the company's commitment to employees and to the city of St.
Paul by creating a unified headquarters complex. A new 500,000 square
foot building, in conjunction with the renovated 500,000 square
feet in existing buildings, would accommodate all employees currently
scattered around downtown.
An architecturally award-winning and functional design tied together
the company's new and existing buildings, and also blended with
adjacent structures. The technologically advanced campus incorporated
a day care center, wellness center, cafeteria, classroom space,
on-site parking and other employee amenities - before most other
companies realized the business wisdom behind this strategy.
The 4-1/2 year project required the synchronization and tracking
of thousands of details handled by dozens of firms. Wind-tunnel
studies, geotechnical surveys and acoustical tests needed to be
coordinated. Products and services had to be purchased on a competitive
basis.
Keeping track of this many details takes daily dedication, technical
expertise and organizational skills. Nelson, Tietz & Hoye was
tapped to handle the process.
"The St. Paul had an excellent in-house staff, but elected
to balance the work load," says John Tietz of Nelson, Tietz
& Hoye. "We had the expertise to manage the project, and
we've maintained an ongoing relationship with the company."
Nelson, Tietz & Hoye was instrumental in translating The St.
Paul Companies commitment into reality, taking care of every
single detail, validating that all the work had been completed -
within specifications, on time and on budget.
